The Coconut Oil Myth

Naysayers claim that coconut oil contains saturated fats and, as a result, can cause problems like heart disease and obesity. Others claim that coconut oil is composed of medium chain triglycerides that can actually increase good HDL cholesterol and lower bad LDL cholesterol levels. As a consumer it’s often difficult to determine the truth around this highly controversial food.

Challenge of The Channel

Lake Monster SwimmersFive local swimmers take on the English Channel this Summer.

When Brent Hobbs swam the English Channel in 2008, he hoped his swim would inspire others. Five years later, it has done exactly that as a team of five local swimmers, the Okanagan Lake Monsters, plans to undertake the very same challenge this summer.

For those familiar with the English Channel, they’ll know swimming across it is not for the faint of heart.

“It certainly takes a commitment, you have to train–a lot” says Brent, whose first-hand experience has already played a key role in the Monsters’ training. Swimming the Channel is as much mental as it is physical, and swimmers must be well prepared if they want to cross it successfully. It’s almost an understatement to say the Channel is a complicated body of water and it demands a healthy dose of respect.

In my life there is a very special spirit that captures the hearts of everyone she meets, with her love of life, her wonderful imagination and storytelling…my granddaughter. It is her spirit and courage that inspires me daily.

You see, an abnormality was found on my daughter’s routine 20 week ultrasound. An abnormality that would eventually lead the doctors to tell us that the fetus would not survive. But she defied them and not only survived but thrived. Much to the specialists surprise and joy. Her first month of life was on lights, beeps, iv’s, tubes, tests. Evanne received a heart transplant at 5 weeks of age. Now while we knew a transplant was not a cure – it exchanges one set of problems for another , we were so grateful for that chance. My little family of three had accepted the adventure to move off to San Diego, leaving our loved ones behind in Canada. Life had offered me a beautiful new city to explore and the opportunity to spend time with my daughter.
